The Black Tones Drop "Bombs" Ahead of New Album
It has been seven years since the release of The Black Tones' critically acclaimed debut LP, Cobain and Cornbread. In 2019, the band had a lot to say about the then-current state of affairs and life in general, with hard-hitting songs like "The Key of Black (They Want Us Dead)," "Rivers Jordan," and "Plaid Pants." Infusing rock & roll, blues, activism, Pacific Northwest sensibility, and Southern soul into their work, The Black Tones' family affair paved the way for a new era of Seattle music while still paying tribute to past trailblazers.
Centered around twins Eva and Cedric Walker, The Black Tones are a local favorite and have shared stages with acts such as Thunderpussy, Dinosaur Jr., Death Cab for Cutie, Weezer, Mavis Staples, Fishbone, and more.
Since their last LP, The Black Tones released a 7-inch through Mike McCready's label, HockeyTalkter Records ("Where Do We Go Now" b/w "The Devil & Grandma"), and a pair of singles from Sub Pop Records ("The End of Everything" b/w "Mr. Mines"). However, I wondered when a new full-length album was in store. Luckily, The Black Tones are back with a bang and, as I can imagine, have a hell of a lot more to say through music.
Earlier this year, the band released a cover of Zebby Tembo's "Trouble Maker," featuring Death Valley Girls. Today, The Black Tones have dropped "Bombs," the lead single from their highly anticipated sophomore album, Diamond Ruby Night. The song was produced by Don Farwell (Warren Dunes, Tres Leches, Black Ends).
For "Bombs," Eva remains on vocals, while Cedric remains on the drum kit. With minimalist but impactful lyrics, the new song is existential and psychedelic, and reminiscent of '80s new wave. Eva's hypnotic vocals lure you in; a chunky bass line anchors the song. Meanwhile, the lyrics make you wonder about what's at stake... Rather than exploding outward, "Bombs" feels restrained—an anxious meditation on a world seemingly going off the rails.

Diamond Ruby Night is set to release on October 30th, via the twins' own record label, Reptar Records.
